Action Item (as stated with DEI strategic plan launch in 2016)
The university will establish a new full-time position for a screen reader testing expert. This individual will have responsibility for testing the accessibility of web pages for all U-M campuses, U-M Google apps, and the university’s core online systems such as enrollment or employment. Additional tests will be conducted in the Canvas environment, in collaboration with the Assistive Technology Higher Education Network (ATHEN).
DEI 1.0 Evaluation Update
During DEI 1.0, the Digital Information Accessibility Coordinator (DIAC) collaborated with Information and Technology Services (ITS) and other units to form an ad hoc “accessibility team” for disseminating resources such as in-person training, online tools and how-to documents offering general guidance and helpful hints. Together, the DIAC and the accessibility team also developed a central website to house accessibility-related resources, guides and training materials (accessibility.umich.edu). Further, ECRT (Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office) and other collaborators created another website (disability.umich.edu), which houses all U-M disability, accommodation and accessibility resources in one centralized location. This resource will help expedite the process of locating and navigating the many offices and support services available to those with disabilities.
Moreover, in June 2022, the University implemented an Electronic Information Accessibility SPG (SPG ). This policy sets forth U-M’s long standing expectations and responsibilities to ensure that its digital and electronic information resources (e.g., websites, videos, mobile applications, etc.) are usable and accessible to all members of the community, including those with disabilities. To assist the community with meeting these expectations, ECRT and ITS created multiple guidance documents and educational resources to ensure units are supported in their digital accessibility efforts.
